I know that only hash marks or for enlisted but i have never been able to figure out what the heck they are for.
Can somebody help me out on this one.

1 hash mark equals 4 years of enlisted service.
your years of service you get one for every four years.

So HardJedi even though I didn't re-up, and I served my four honorably does that mean I rate a hash mark on here?

I would say yes. 4 years honorable is 4 years honorable. Not sure about the regs for the uniform. But I say you rate it, Snipowsky.
Yes - even if you didn't re-up you rate a hash mark for 4 years of service.
I thought it was 4 years ACTIVE duty, not just 4 years. Reserves only get credit for ACTIVE time. Am I off base here ??
I'm short by @ 10 days ACTIVE duty. Got a 'Holiday cut' and terminal leave, so I was home before Christmas '79.
Do I rate ??

Check your DD-214
Total active service time.
If it's 4 yrs then you are good to go.
