Archibald Henderson-Fifth Commandant from October 17, 1820 to January 6, 1859. This is according to my book "The Marines"!

I think it came from the Pacific Campaigns. Marines were allocated so many units of whole blood in case they were wounded, because of the war rationing.

So each Marine had a fixed number of blood chits attached to their ID tags. The Corpman would remove one for each unit of blood. If you ran out, you had to wheel and deal for more.

Blood Chits;

Given to pilots in WW II, flying over China. If shot down, they were to be given to ANY Chinese person, offering reward for medical attention, the safe return of the pilot.

I don't recall the reasoning for the phrase 'blood chit', but think it had something to do with the personal HONOR, of seeing the pilot safely home.

Yellowing was right as far as it being called a Truck (Favorite Meritiorious Board Question: "How many trucks are on any Marine Corps base?" Answer: "One"). It contains a Map (of the base), a match (to burn the map with), and a cartridge (historically .45 caliber, for the CO to off himself with, rather than be captured with the base, in case it was overrun).
