I had that itchy trigger feeling hit me yesterday. I haven't been hunting all year and am really looking forward to it.

I always wanted to try my hand at 1,000 yard shooting. The best I ever shot on the KD course was 243.

But I caught a break that day. Between the 300 and 500 yard line we had a 30 minute interruption. That gave us all a chance to cool down and relax some.

Civilians still can't hardly believe me when I tell them about hitting at 500 yards. "Yessir, that front site post is actually larger than the silhouette target."

I put 9 rounds in center mass. I figured I had already qualifed expert, so I challenged myself and added 2 clicks of elavation. Bullseye, right in the forehead!

I felt pretty good about myself, until later that afternoon. The Marksmenship Instructor was hitting black at 800 yards, in the off-hand position!

Can I get some input on 1,000 yard shooting? I would guess that the math and discipline are alot more unforgiving.

Pick a flat shooting cal, get a good scope, shoot early in the morning and most important, get a really good trigger. As a Marine, you know the rest.

Armalite Corp. makes several models of AR-15 in the .308 calibre. Is that sufficient for that kind of distance? I have no info on their trigger break.

Armalite also makes a .50 cal, but up here in Canada posessing that kind of fire power is a Federal offense. Too bad. :(

Bear Kills One, Wounds Nine in Picnic Attack
Mon Oct 18,10:02 AM ET
BUCHAREST (Reuters) (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=573&ncid=757&e=5&u=/nm/20041018/od_nm/romania_bear_attack_dc)

A brown bear in Romania killed one person and severely wounded nine others picnicking on a mountain pasture in Transylvania, a TV station said on Saturday.

Local mayor George Scriparu said riot police had been deployed in nearby woods to catch the bear after it went wild in the rural spot on the outskirts of Brasov city.

"It (the bear) even attacked the paramedics who arrived at the scene to help the wounded," Scripcaru told Realitatea TV.

How many of you have crazy cousins and Uncles that would have nailed that bear within 20 seconds of the first attack?

yellowwing, You don't really need a .50 cal. at only 1000 yds. The .308 win. will work but you may want to consider a .300 mag. It will reach farther and flater then the .308 for your long distance shooting. Also, if it were me, I would chose a bolt action to drive the tack.

My beautiful wife just laughed like hell when she saw your, "only 1000 yds" comment!

There were snipers in Nam that took out gooks at up to 1,500 yards on a regular basis. Those were the ones with the biggest price tag on their heads too.
