:) Back into the mists of time 1964,I was fortunate to work with a USMC Battalion on the island of Mindoro Phillipines.I was with a small Detachment of RM's we landed from HMS Albion by Chopper
upon reaching the LZ we took up defensive positions as all good Marines Should, only to be confronted by an entire USMC Battalion formed up as on Parade, getting to our feet we formed up in responce to the welcome, the CO of the Battalion made us feel at home with brother Marines, the food was great, plenty of beer, and a great time was had by all,for two weeks we worked with the Battalion, and in the end before I embarked back aboard the Albion,I had parted with My Green Beret and some of the Jungle equipment that some of the guy's were interested in,I went back aboard dressed in USMC sgts khaki uniform,Back aboard the Sgt Major looked me up and down and politely informed me that I was on the wrong Ship??. Many thanks to all those Marines of that unknown USMC Battalion for the comradeship,Semper Fidelis,

...Spent many a drunken night of libo there. While stationed in Okinawa the first time ('85-'87), managed to use all of my EML (Environmental, Morale Leave) in and around various locales of the Philippines.

Have you checked out these sites? Tons 'o pictures - brought back a lot of memories for this Marine!

Just a little self promoting here.

The site subicbaymarines.com has some great photos, and if you look under the years 1977/1978 you will find me there as a young Marine, and then under the year 2002, you will find me as an ol' man, who went back to just check the place out one more time.

Ahhh yes, Republika ng Pilipinas... Liked it so much I brought one back with me. I even have several bottles of Red Horse in the fridge. I can't get enough pansit, lumpia or adobo. Though, the blaute and salted fish I can do without. I gotta say, there are times I almost miss being nearly run over by a jeepney or the smell of dried fish in the open market and even thinking that 50 cents was too much to pay for a beer!

I had my first San Miguel when we came from Oki for maneuvers. Made a wet landing, was met on the beach by kids selling 2 bottles of chilled San Magoo for one pack of cigarettes which cost us a dollar a carton.

Came back in 92 to visit a retired buddy. Mindananao reminded me of MY Okinawa of the 60's. Moved here, lock, stock, and barrell in '96 and began to create new memories.

Three rug rats later, and another due in August made me a believer in reincarnation (mine). If I had known that life could be this much fun, I would have asked to be born sooner.

The peso is 50 to the buck, and San Magoo is twenty four cents a bottle, if you buy it by the case.

No worry about keeping up with the Jones's, because here, I am Jones.

The ONLY thing I miss is my Marine buddies, but thanks to e-mail, we keep in touch.

...The 3 websites referred to above, are maintained by brother Marines. Gotta say this, I'm married to an LBFM myself. Look forward to retiring in Bagio when the last of the kids graduate from H.S.

On my trip to the PI last February the main goal was to set the plans in motion for the day I retire. Wanted to see how things were around the old base, and in Olongapo.

Also looked at Baguio, and around Laguna (lake Taal) still not set on any one spot yet. It will be 8 more years until retirement, so I'll shop around and keep an open mind. ;)

firstsgtmike, how do you rate Cagayan de Oro?
