Lawrence ''Larry'' Hildebrandt Plummer, a state representative and state senator for 14 years, died of vascular dementia Thursday. He was 63.

Plummer co-owned Ahern-Plummer Funeral Home, a family business for decades, with his brother. He served as funeral director.

Plummer spent two terms in the House from 1978 to 1982, and then voters elected him to the senate, representing District 39 in South Miami.

His brother, J.L. Plummer Jr., said public service came naturally to his younger brother who followed in the footsteps of previous Plummer generations.

''It's a long family tradition,'' he said. ``My great-grandfather was the mayor of Key West, and Dad served on the Miami-Dade School Board, and I am a former Miami commissioner.''

Plummer was born in 1940 in Miami and graduated from Miami Senior High in 1958.

He earned his degree from the University of Miami in 1962.

He then served in the United States Marines for a few years, doing stints in North Carolina and Cincinnati.

The Plummer brothers grew up helping their father run the Ahern-Plummer Funeral Home that he bought in 1949.

''We both grew up in the business,'' his brother said. ``It was my Dad's, and then the two of us just came right into the business.''

During his career as a legislator, Plummer represented both Miami-Dade and Monroe counties.

''He always said it came natural to him because in the funeral business you are serving people, and he did the same thing in public service,'' his brother said.

While in the Senate, Plummer sat on many committees, including one focused on the AIDS epidemic, one dealing with environmental education and several dealing with the process of government.

When he wasn't working, Plummer loved to travel and go boating.

He was a member of the Bachelors Club, the Coral Reef Yacht Club, the Jaycees and the Knights of Columbus.

Including his brother, Plummer is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at Ahern-Plummer at 60th Avenue and Bird Road in Miami. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Jude Catholic Church, 1501 Brickell Ave.

In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Miami, 2805 SW 32nd Ave., Miami FL. 33133.
