For me, making rank wasn't necessarily hard, it just seemed to take a long time between pay grades.

Sgt-SSgt, 5 years
SSgt-GySgt, 5 1/2 years
GySgt - MSgt, 5 1/2 years
MSgt-MGySgt, 5 1/2 years

but after Korea the bubble was popped again, and things slowed down--MotorT, for instance, had lotsa buck sgts around, I knew a T/Sgt (George Lepp) w/ a MT spec. no., who had about 13 years in grade--not uncommon.

I remember an Officer/SNCO meeting at HQMC about '61 when we were told that we would all be 3 ranks higher in the next three years. High expectations! At that time, Officers and SNCOs were going TAD to Nam--not generally known--and getting their tickets punched. Kennedy may have slowed down plans when he advised DOD we were backing off RVN--but things resumed a bit later...
