MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. (Aug. 12, 2004) -- With a week full of wind and rain, Friday's picture perfect mid-70-degree weather gave a shock to golfers on base.

Enjoying the weather were members of Marine Corps Recruiting Command at their 2nd annual golf tournament to help raise money for the command's Marine Corps Birthday Ball.

More than 90 players came out with their "A" game, including Sgt. Maj. John L. Estrada, sergeant major of the Marine Corps; Dumfries Mayor, Melvin Bray; and former Washington Redskins football player, Roy Jefferson.

"We played a four-man, best ball game, and the only special rules were to have fun," said Staff Sgt. Wayne Kelly, recruiting specialist, MCRC. "A portion of the tournament was also given to Marines recovering at National Naval Medical Center Bethesda for comfort items like shirts, socks and boots."

The first place winner was Sgt. Tommy Pearce, with a score of 12 under par, second place went to Al Baker with a score of nine under par, and third place went to Master Gunnery Sgt. George Martinez, with a score of seven under par.

First, second and third place winners received trophies and gift certificates to the Marine Corps Exchange.

The idea about a golf tournament arose last year while Kelly was trying to find a way to help pay for the ball.

"We wanted a way for the junior Marines to be able to afford their ticket while having a great time at the ball," he said. "Last year the Marines paid less than $20 for their tickets and had a great time - we're hoping to do the same this year."

Kelly said the golf tournament prompted people to get out of the office in a friendly environment with all ranks.

"This year we had a great turnout. It really brings the community together to come out for a good cause," Kelly said.

Kelly said that Estrada, one of the VIPs at the event, was a big supporter of MCRC and everyone was happy to have him at the tournament.

"We all need to have fun every once in a while," Estrada said. "MCRC had good participation, and it was a beautiful day to have a golf tournament."

Although there were prizes of shirts, golf towels, golf balls and a Budweiser golf bag, the main focus of the day was on the weather.

"All week, the weather has been awful," Kelly said. "I think of it like this - when (MCRC) goes out to put someone in the Marine Corps, we do it right, just like the weather. We planned it this way."
