If President Bush orders military action in Iraq to unseat Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, U.S. combat forces would be poised to launch from several key bases in nearly a half-dozen Persian Gulf nations.

Military analysts estimate that between 20,000 and 40,000 U.S. service members in the Persian Gulf already are within striking distance of an assault into Iraq, including 2,300 Marines mostly from Camp Pendleton and Miramar Marine Corps Air Station and 2,000 sailors on three San Diego-based Navy ships.

Several military analysts say other units are being ordered to the region in what they're describing as a build-up of U.S. forces preparing for an invasion into Iraq.
