Three Pendleton Marines killed in Iraq

CAMP PENDLETON ---- The military Monday released the names of three more Camp Pendleton Marines who were recently killed in clashes against insurgents in Iraq, adding to the six local Marines whom officials announced were killed last week.
Sgt. Yadir Reynoso, 27, of Wapato, Wash., was killed on Aug. 5 and Cpl. Roberto Abad, 22, of Los Angeles was killed in action on Aug. 6, according to the Department of Defense.
Both were members of Camp Pendleton's 1st Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, the ground force of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit. The unit is stationed around Najaf, south of Baghdad.
The Defense Department Monday also announced the death of Lance Cpl. Jonathan Collins, 19, of Crystal Lake, Ill., who was killed Sunday in the Al Anbar province west of Baghdad.
Reynoso and Abad were among several Marines who have died since fighting erupted in Najaf last week, just days after the Marines replaced Polish peacekeepers and U.S. Army soldiers there.
American, British and Iraqi forces Monday continued to battle militiamen loyal to rebel Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr in Najaf, Basra, Nasiriyah, and the Sadr City section of eastern Baghdad, according to the Associated Press.
The Marines claim to have killed more than 300 rebel fighters since fighting broke out a week ago.
Marines also continued to clash with Sunni rebels in the region west of Baghdad, where Collins was killed Sunday and where four other Marines were killed last week.
Collins was a member of Camp Pendleton's 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, which has patrolled in and around the provincial capital city of Ramadi since March. The battalion has lost at least 32 of its Marines ---- the most of any single Marine battalion in Iraq.
The battalion's 1,000-some Marines and sailors will be replaced by another Camp Pendleton battalion in September. Their sister battalion ---- the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment ---- is due to start deploying to Iraq later this month.
