MARINE CORPS AIR STATION BEAUFORT, SC (August 6, 2004) -- An Air Station Marine was meritoriously promoted Monday during a special ceremony in front of Building 601.

Sergeant Denord Shareef Muhammad II, police ground maintenance NCO, station logistics, was promoted to his current rank after winning the Marine Corps Air Bases East meritorious sergeant board, which took place at Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C., in July.

The 24-year-old was the first Fightertown Marine to be promoted to sergeant by MCABE in over a decade.

The Boston native enlisted in the Corps May 27, 2001. After completing recruit training and Marine Combat Training, he went to Basic Management School at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Upon graduation, he was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 172, Camp Butler, Japan, where he performed duties as a maintenance management specialist. After completion of his tour, he reported to MCAS Beaufort in June 2003.

Since then, Muhammad had been on a MCABE board once before, so he knew what he was up against and was prepared. He was “100 percent confident” about the board.

His colleagues would often help Muhammad prepare for the board.

“I would often be asked questions by staff NCOs as I walked by them in the hallway,” Muhammad said.

On July 22, he went to the board. The panel consisted of seven sergeants major, and one master sergeant.

According to Muhammad, when asked by the panel why he should be promoted, he responded with confidence, “The reason ‘I will’ be promoted is because of my abilities, my dependability, my accountability of myself and my Marines and my commendability.”

After it was over, they made a unanimous decision to promote Muhammad.

“It meant a lot to me to be the first Air Station Marine (in over a decade) to be promoted by MCABE,” he said.

Word came down quickly and many fellow Marines congratulated him when he got home. Even Col. Harmon A. Stockwell, commanding officer, MCAS Beaufort stopped a meeting and would not continue until he was face-to-face with Muhammad to congratulate him.

Even though he had won this promotion, Muhammad remains humble about it.

“It’s not about me winning the sergeant board,” Muhammad said. “It’s about me representing the Air Station.”
