Quantico martial-arts facility dedicated to Raiders

Members of the legendary World War II Marine Corps Raiders may be declining in numbers, but the Corps’ top martial-arts instructors don’t want you to forget their warrior philosophies.
That’s why they’ve dedicated their new facility at Quantico, Va., to the legendary group.
Charles H. Meacham, president of the Marine Raiders Association, was on hand for the Aug. 2 ribbon cutting of Raider Hall.
The building will house the Martial Arts Center of Excellence, where the Corps’ best black belts develop doctrine for the martial-arts program. The $1.5 million facility is equipped with a fully padded gym for martial-arts demonstrations. And it will also be used by future reunions for veteran Raiders.
The Raiders’ renowned close-combat skills and their philosophy of being both mentally and physically prepared for battle is what martial-arts personnel say they identify with.
“That is the same sort of culture that the Marine Corps martial-arts program hopes to encapsulate,” said Quantico spokesman Capt. Jeff Landis.
Also in attendance at the ribbon cutting was retired Col. Evans C. Carlson, son of Brig. Gen. Evans F. Carlson, founder of the 2nd Raider Battalion. Carlson dedicated a “Gung-Ho” plague to the building, in honor of the Raiders’ claim to fame of introducing the Chinese “Gung-Ho” philosophy of working together to the Marine Corps.
The Marine Raiders of World War II are known for doggedly fighting Japanese forces throughout the Pacific, including their raid on Makin Island in 1942 and their 31-day patrol behind enemy lines on Guadalcanal.
In their two years of existence, the 8,600 Raiders and Navy corpsmen received seven Medals of Honor, 136 Navy Crosses, 21 Distinguished Service Crosses, 330 Silver Stars, and 169 Bronze Stars, according to a Marine Corps press release.
