View Full Version : Three Mile Run Times?

Just wondering - what would you guess the 'average' 3 mile run PFT score is in the corps?

Also, can you remember what the usual platoon 3 mile run PFT score average was for the final PFT in boot camp?

I've been working on my run times a lot lately because most Marines have told me it is the hardest score to bring up as opposed to pull-ups and crunches. I'm just curious where I stand as of right now.

Thanks,
Poolee Webber

I would take a stab at it and say the avg. is around 22 minutes. No idea what the run times for a platoon in boot is.

28- 30 minutes for a platoon.

Average run time is around 23-25 minutes in the Air Wing. But in true Air Wing fashion, we have our fast movers and our lumbering helicopters.

I'm 15 now, and I can run a 20 3 miles run, but when you run don't you have gear on? So it would be much harder

average I would say in most of units I was with, was 19-21 minutes. ( these were all infantry units by the way, and I said AVERAGE time.

My run times varied. My fastest was 18:10 (Don't think I wasn't mad about that deal) and my slowest was 25:30. (And that was in boot camp oddly enough. I ran the initial PFT faster than the final, but that's a long story) As for average, who cares? Being average should never be your goal. Be the best you can be, no matter where that falls in. But to answer, the average run time in my platoon would have been 20:00 to 23:00. (Communications Platoon).

Average for us at 8th and I was around 21:00, we had lots of rabbits and a few turtles but the turtles eventually went away. The bad part of running our three miles is we had to do it down at Anacostia Park. (Ghetto) I can't remember how many needles and crap we saw. Oh yeah and before we got to the three mile course, we had to run a mile and a half to get there and another to get back... I actually think it help stretch us out.

Fastest 1-Mile: 4:01:10 (OCS 1998)
Fastest 3-Mile: 15:41 (1997)
Boot Camp PFT 3-Mile (2001): 17:46 (Battalion High PFT: 300)
OCS Final PFT 3-Mile: 17:56 (300 PFT)
Current Mile/Minute Marine Corps Marathon: 6:21 (over 26 miles)

Not bad for a 36 year-old Lance Corporal, eh?

Get some, poolees!:marine:

Boot Final PFT- 19:32... not quite there with you LCpl, but gettin' there... and still First Class by more than enough.... then again, there's no such thing as "enough" in the Corps.

When I did the Juniors increment of the PLC program at OCS this summer, there was a candidate that did the three miles in 15:05. That's just nuts however it's true. Also, as far as an average for three mile times, out platoon all had under 24 minute run times.

I ran mine in 20:30 in the stumps but in texas I ran it in 18:30. Mainly because i wasn't berathing in sand and there is actually air to breath there

Hell Caesar. Running in the stumps is the easiest place there IS to run. should have been quicker than normal.

No way. I run well there but its so much easier to run i texas because the air is thicker and your not breathing sand. Most east coast Marines add 3 min to their 3 mile time.

Weird. I'd think that the air would be thicker in South Carolina because of the constant high humidty of the southeast.

Also, you'd think that after running in the same conditions for 3 months, your pre-boot camp three mile run time would still improve significantly.

wind musta kicked up some. I logged MANY miles at 29Palms, and only time I ever breathed in any sand was when I hit the deck for some reason ;)

HardJedi... I disagree about 29 Palms being the easiest place to run. The air is thinner there, thats the reason I always heard. The fastest I ever ran out there was 22 something. In Pendleton my last PFT I ran a little bit over 20 minutes.

Being on the Air Wing side of things my average was 24 min. Best time was my last one, 19 minutes. It was in the PI on the way back from West Pac. We start a one of the Grunt Camps on top of a big hill, it was about 3/4 down hill and I mean down hill and ended on a beach where the OIC of our Det had a keg tapped for us.....my type of a PFT......

Tom Hansen,
I've done the PI PFT. You start off at the Lower MAU Camp, go downhill, around the end of the runway, along the water until you get to Dungaree Beach and a cold San Miguel...

Ah the stumps, how I miss that place. Seriopusly I actually miss it. As of right know I'm slotted to go to V13, which I believe is stationed in Hawaii, but I'm not positive. I'm still waiting to be Marine Corps on this one, because this is a dream come true.

Hey Top:

It was a easy PFT in the PI wasn't it? It was my last one as well, going out on a high note. Being Air Wing there is no formal PT, they leave it up to to keep in shape. We did 2 to 3 PFTs a year depending on who the CO was. I ran a few times a month to keep down the run times, being a smoker you payed if you did not run in between PFT's. It always was fun getting done ahead of most others at 23 minutes, the looks on some of the more out of shape Marines when they got done with the run was worth a laugh. It was like death was on their door steps. The sit ups always got me but managed to get 65 to 70 pumped out. It's my understanding that they don't do sit ups any more, they do crunhes. Never really had to do crunches after boot camp so I'm not a expert on them but would rather do the crunches than the situps....

I've headd that 29 Palms has one of the longest PFT courses. Anyone know if thats true.

Ceasar,
I'll be a field radio operator once I go to MOS school...in the stumps. My unit's going back to Iraq in January so I'll probably go to MCT and my mos school then.
The stumps can't be too bad at night...just look up at the sky.

you'll only be there for 6-7 wks including your time in MAT Plt. It ain't near as hot there now so you got out of the bad part. You'd think it can't but it is always either still hot or really really windy. And seeing how its a desert you can imagine the fun trying to see.
