MARINE CORPS LOGISTICS BASE BARSTOW, Calif. (Jul. 22, 2004) -- A corporal from the MCLB Barstow Provost Marshall’s Office took the title of noncommissioned officer of the quarter July 1, after proving himself worthy of the honor measured by a uniform inspection, drill competition, his physical fitness score and answering questions from a board of senior Marines.

Cpl. Nicholas D. Paul, a patrolman here, was born January 28, 1983, and knew from a young age that he wanted to be a part of law enforcement, he said.

Paul said he joined the Marine Corps for many reasons, but especially to gain law enforcement experience. On Sept. 4, 2001, Paul went to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., to make the transition from civilian to Marine. After becoming a Marine he went to Marine Combat Training at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune N.C., and on to military police patrolman training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

At Fort Leonard Wood, Paul was awarded a Certificate of Commendation for being the Honor Graduate of his class, he said.

Paul’s first assignment of duty was at Marine Corps Base Okinawa, Japan, where he worked as a patrolman. He spent 18 months in Okinawa, and received an Overseas Service Ribbon.

After completing his tour on Okinawa, Paul arrived at MCLB Barstow, and was given the opportunity to return to Fort Leonard Wood to attend Special Reaction Team schooling, he said. A SRT is the Marine Corps’ version of a SWAT team, and tackles different law enforcing tasks then a regular patrolman, Paul said.

Master Sgt. Richard N. Holman, MCLB Barstow’s Provost Sergeant, said Paul is the “whole package” as the NCO of the Quarter.

“Cpl. Paul strives to always do the right thing,” he said.

Paul knows that with all of these different types of training and experiences, he will have a better chance of becoming an employee for the Federal Bureau of Investigation or Drug Enforcement Administration.

He plans on getting out of the Marine Corps to become a student at the University of Central Florida.
