The UK Government has always been very sparse in rewarding her Service-men in time of conflics since 1945.
Royal Marine decorations and awards.The Naval General Service Medal has been the only medal awarded for various campaigns from 1945-1962,and for each conflict a campaign clasp was awarded,there have been 12 Campaign clasps awarded since 1945-1962.The Naval General Service Medal was discontinued in 1962 and replaced with the general service Medal awarded to all branches of the Armed Forces,and since 1962 13 Campaign clasps
have been awarded. Some of these Medals and clasps are much sort after by Medal Collectors,the Naval General Service Medal with the clasp (Yangtze 1949) worth about £800 sterling,the Naval General Service Medal was considered by Marines to be the best of all Medals awarded. Other Medals awarded sinc 1945 are the British Korea Medal also awarded to all Commonwealth Forces 1950-1952, The South Atlantic Medal (Falkland Isles), Gulf Medal 1990-1991,the Saudi Arabian and Kuwaiti Liberation Medals
were not approved and not allowed to be worn on uniform,the Campaign medals have always been engraved with the recipients official service No,Name and Unit,and to be awarded a Campaign Medal you had to serve at least 30 days in the Combat zone.
Service Medals! the Naval Long Service Medal (Navy and Marine) was awarded after 15 years service,the E11R Coranation medal,only a small number of these were issued to the Forces.All Foriegn decorations have to be approved by the Government.
As a point of Interest the most American Decorations awarded to a Foriegn Unit was to the 41st Royal Marine (Independent) Commando,Lt Col. D.B.Drysdale was awarded his second Silver Star,It is extremely rare and if not unique for a foriegner to be awarded two silver Stars,Major Aldridge RM. received the the Silver Star,and Ten Royal Marines were awarded the Bronze Star with V, Col F.N. Grant RM. The Legion Of Merit,and The Presidential unit Citation was Awarded to the 41st Royal Marine (Ind) Commando
