I am disgusted to hear the Marine Corps Hymn being played on a commercial for a god**** electric trimmer. This pitiful commercial is trying to emulate "Full Metal Jacket", that's fine with me because we all know...everyone wants to be like the Marines. The problem is with the music they have chosen- the Marine Corps Hymn. These people have a lot of nerve and utter disrespect. That Hymn is for Marines to remember and honor current and fallen warriors. They should be ashamed. I am FUMING over this kind of abuse of the Corps tradition. :devious:

We need more Gung Ho brothers to put an end to this ... I am drafting a petition, which will be posted online soon. I would love to know if anyone can give me leagal information regarding the use of the Hymn.

The Marine Corps hymn might be the less of their troubles.
For one the actor playing the Drill Instructor is wearing a complete Marine Uniform down to the Gunny chevrons.
Than there's the medals that he wearing.
The wearing of those medals and the uniform might be a federal crime.
The Headquarters of the Marine Corps should be made aware of this misrepresentation of the Marine Corps...
If he was or is a Marine, he must know that its conduct unbecoming and disrespectful of the Marine Corps
In all fairness, we should E-mail them that they might be in violation of federal law...

The only thing lacking in the uniform that he wearing is the Emblem of our beloved Corps, the Eagle, Globe and Fouled Anchor...

PS, I still have many of my Recon skills, even if I did not use them in Vietnam, that was left to my "Angel" in Headquarters United States Marine Corps

I've seen that on the tube, already. It's just another stupid commercial ripping off the Corps, and a good movie (well, at least the first half is good)
BTW, devildog21345...
A Gunnery Sergeant is an E-7, and Gunny is spelled with a capital "G".
You'd think a Corporal (with a hash mark, no less) would know that!

if you look real close at his chevrons they don't have the cross rifles, so there probably wouldn't be any legal action in this matter. i did how ever send them an e-mail with my opinions on this.

you know i give my bro **** about it,but i sure am glad he went in to some branch of the military instead of letting his life get all screwed up
First, the crossed rifles were added in 1958. As was the rank of Lance Corporal, therefore an E-6 Gunnery Sergeant is very possible.
Second, wearing the Marine Corps uniform in a movie, commercial, as a halloween costume, or just to impress your wife while having sex is not a crime. Impersonation comes in when you identify yourself as a U.S. Government Employee that is "protected" under the Geneva Conventions. Identifying yourself in this manner constitutes a little more than just putting on a uniform in a private setting or as a costume.
Third, the Marines' Hymn (not Marine Corps Hymn) probably shouldn't be played for commercialization, however, since they wanted to compare their product with the Marine Corps, they are making a bold statement. I wonder if it's true.

Figured it would be something like that... vis a vis the Gunny/E-6/E-7 stuff. Funny, how so much changes over such a short time.
-----------------
Last time I was in D.C. for the MC Birthday (2002), I met Jim Neighbors, and shook his hand at the Iwo Jima Memorial. One of the guys I was with asked him to say "GOLLIE". He just laughed and said he's asked to do that all the time. A nice old guy, and he spared us the "GOLLIE"..
Gomer Pyle USMC, was sanctioned and supported by the Corps. Many of the stock footage scenes where shot at MCRD San Diego, and other bases around SoCal. I used to watch it occasionally after classes at C&E Bn (when C&E was still at San Diego). A couple times I even saw the film crews out filming around the base.
What struck me about that show was that the uniforms, props, and sets were pretty much authentic for the Corps at the time. Of course, you expected the story lines to be way off base (a Gunny who's best buddies are a Corporal, and a PFC, and he even goes on liberty with them?!?!?), but the dialogue had obviously been written by people who had been in the Army, instead of the Marine Corps. Gomer calling the Gunny, "Sarge", was most glaring example of that!
Also, even though the Vietnam War was going full bore, nobody on the show ever mentioned it, and nobody had any ribbons that reflected Vietnam service. The Gunny did have Korean war ribbons.

I sent my comment. I don't give a rip about the mocking of the movie but I do not believe they should use the Hymn of Our Corps.
Just my opinion

Anyone seen the Nike commercial saying "Semper Fidelis"? I was shocked when I seen that! These corporations have no class! Using our mottos to get themselves more green! How sickening. I'd sign any petition to stop this!

Lighten up, Marines.
I've seen the Marine's Hymn attached to films and public offerings that are much worse than that idiotic commercial.
Don't get your panties bunched up over something you can't control, and over something the Corps, itself, doesn't seem to think is worth the effort to go after.
If you want a cause, then start getting upset over the way actual young Marines, "real" people, are disrespected by democrats and liberals, for doing their job, and defending our country.
Get upset about John Kerry disrespecting a memorial to those who fought and won one of the most fierce battles of WWII (Iwo Jima), while at the same time using it's image to disrespect all men and women serving our country in the Vietnam war.
Get upset that John Kerry, has been "honored" by the Vietnamese Communist government for "helping" them win the Vietnam war.
Get upset that this scumbag traitor, John Kerry, is now trying to be President Of The United States.
Get upset that there are Vietnam Veterans who are actually supporting and helpng him.
Get upset about something that means something. Not some stupid, little, no account commercial that don't mean nuthin' anyway!!!
OUT!
Peaceful Warrior -
Are you hearing me whan I say that the title of the hymn is not the Marine Corps Hymn? It's the Marines' Hymn. Get it right or don't b|tch about how others misuse it.
The Marines' Hymn has been used many times in many movies, commercials, and other things.
Sir Winston Churchill, British Prime Minister, became an ardent admirer of the U.S. Marine Corps. In the company of guests of state, he often demonstrated his respect for U.S. Marines by reciting, from memory, all three verses of The Marines' Hymn.
The music is from the opera, Genevieve de Brabant by Jacques Offenbach. The Marine Corps secured a copyright on the song on August 19, 1919 but it is now in the public domain.
Get over it and get over it quickly.
