A U.S. Marine raised in suburban Western Springs was killed in a firefight just west of Baghdad, officials said Saturday.

Vincent Sullivan, 22, who was married six months ago, was on his second tour of duty in Iraq when he was killed.

The Illinois Senate observed a moment of silence for Sullivan on Saturday. He was the nephew of state Sen. Dave Sullivan (R-Park Ridge), who was on the Senate floor for a discussion about death benefits for Illinois soldiers serving overseas when given the news.

"He was a bright young man who died a hero," Sen. Sullivan said.

"He died protecting the world. We've suffered a great loss."

Vincent Sullivan was a lance corporal in the 24th STA (surveillance and target acquisition) Platoon weapons company. He was the son of Michael Sullivan of Western Springs.

Funeral arrangements are pending in New Jersey, where Vincent Sullivan lived.
