CAMP PENDLETON – Retired 1st Sgt. John Farritor and retired Col. Edwin Schick remember all too well where they were in February 1945.

They, alongside thousands of other Marines, were lugging around a 75 mm howitzer on the island of Iwo Jima in what would prove to be a decisive battle of World War II.

"This is the weapon I went through Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima with. We fired a hell of a lot of rounds," said Farritor, 83, clad in his sergeant's uniform with a chest full of ribbons. "It was hell. That's about all you can say to describe it."
