SUFFOLK, VA. (July 8, 2004) -- Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Jon A. Gallinetti relieved Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Gordon C. Nash as commander of the Joint Warfighting Center and U.S. Joint Forces Command's director for joint training (J7) in a ceremony here today.

Nash, who has commanded the center since 2002, will assume duties as the deputy commander of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Atlantic, the Marine Corps component of U.S. Joint Forces Command.

"Maj. Gen Gallinetti and I have been friends for many years and am confident that he will be a tremendous leader for our team," said Nash.

As commander of the Joint Warfighting Center, Gallinetti will manage programs that train combat personnel and organizations from all services for joint operations. Additionally, the center assists with real-world contingency planning.

Commissioned a second lieutenant in June 1972 upon graduation from California State University, Fresno, Calif., Gallinnetti is no stranger to the Norfolk-based U.S. Joint Forces Command.

In August 1996 as a colonel, he reported to the command's predecessor, U.S. Atlantic Command (USACOM), as the chief of the Peacetime Engagement Division of the Plans and Policy Directorate. He was responsible for planning NATO Partnership for Peace (PFP) exercises and establishing contacts with military members of the former Soviet Union. He became the director of the USACOM Joint Experimentation Directorate (J9) in April 1998 that resulted in the stand-up of the organization, along with planning for numerous experiments over the next five-year period.

A career Marine Corps aviator, Gallinetti has served numerous tours throughout the world with deployments to Japan and southwest Asia, most recently as the chief of staff for Combined Joint Task Force 7 in Iraq.

Other stateside tours include acting as the deputy commander of the Marine Forces Reserve and assist wing commander of the Second Marine Air Wing. Most recently, he was the commander of Marine Corps Bases Western Area and commanding general of Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar, Calif.

In addition to his bachelor's degree, Gallinetti holds master's degrees from the Naval War College, Newport, R.I., and Salve Regina University.

Gallinetti's medals and decorations include awards of the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal as well as the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with four bronze stars.

He has accumulated over 5,000 accident-free flight hours during his career flying several types of tactical jet aircraft.
