to any websites that have a lot of info about boot camp, besides the about.com article? Also, does anyone have any links to videos about boot camp? I'd like to have as much knowledge as possible before I leave for boot camp so I can be best prepared. If anyone knows of any good sites or links to good downloads, please let me know.

Thanks,

Poolee Webber

Heh....Angel, Full Metal Jacket's version of bootcamp is completely different from what actually goes on today. I know ya didn't mean any harm, but if I were you I would not judge any branch of the service, let alone the Marine Corps, by what you see in some hollywood movie.

Thanks for trying to be helpful though.

only similarites between that movie and real life is that there are some pretty funny moments in both. Don't get me wrong though, just cause something makes you laugh at times doesn't make it easy.

"FELLOW MARINES" ????

Where did YOU come across FELLOW MARINES ??

Fellow Poolees, maybe, fellow wannabees, maybe.

Use caution as you tread on sacred ground. Some will over look your comments, some will admonish you.

Some will 'clean your clock' if you speak (type) with too much familiarity with OUR Corps. When (if) you earn the Eagle Globe and Anchor, you'll be a 'fellow'.

My humble opinion......I never remark on a Marine subject....I'm not a Marine....We as civilans do not understand the True Feeling of being a Marine..I am here to Learn.....I might have been married to a Marine for over 26 years....and learned about the Marine Corps...but..I will show the Respect to the Marines for their Dedication...for giving us Our Freedom...

I personally felt that parts of the boot camp segment were reminiscent of boot camp - but on the whole it was not an accurate representation of when I earned the title - 1986. I can't speak for how accurate it was to 1960's boot camp or to Nam - I wasn't there.

I have seen the documentaries that Sparrowhawk posted and they are a better approimxation. However, as others have said, no video, book, or personal recount can prepare you completely for boot camp.

I agree with Sparrowhawk...You can prepare physically but not mentally...The Corps will teach you all you need to know when you get there.

Angel, don't feel too bad, I would have said the same thing to him. While the violence towards recruits is no longer acceptable, and is avoided for the most part, some scenes were pretty close. The O course and confidence course scenes were good, although two recruits would never be left alone on the "stairway to heaven." The drill scenes were decent. And R. Lee Ermey was pretty danged good... only a Marine could have pulled it off that well. Of course, it is a movie, but for a work of fiction, it isn't all bad.

Now, more to the point. No amount of preparation can leave you prepared for Recruit Training. It is something you have to experience. You can't read about it, or watch a movie of it, and understand what its like to have a DI on your back from sun up to sun down. The feeling that it will go on and on forever can't be reconstructed in the pages of a book, no matter how well written. And when most of us went to boot camp, there was no such thing as the internet. We couldn't get on the computer and learn a tenth of a percent of what you see in one thread here. Now, take the time you would have spent watching a movie and go run. That will do more for you than any book could.
