Quantico thanks officer for long record of firsts
Maj. Gen. Clifford L. Stanley completed a 33-year Marine Corps career yesterday that broke ground for African-Americans.
But the legacy the Washington native was most interested in leaving was being a man of compassion.
"The fact that I care and that I can say as a man and a Marine that it's OK to love your people," Stanley said, was the most important lesson he wanted others to take from him.
