I was just wondering -

What kind of security clearences do you need to go through if you are an intelligence specialist?

Do you take polygraphs and things like that?

Also, if anyone is in intell, what is training like? What are your main duties?

I'm trying to decide on an MOS, and I was thinking intelligence would be cool. I qualified for basically every MOS with my asvab scores.

Hmmmm. not really sure. At one, point, because of my duties, I held a secret Security clearance, and the background check was done without my knowledge at all. One day, they just said, " here's your badge" and I had it. I found out later that some people from where I grew up had been asked about me.

I also know you can't have much, if any, kind of a criminal record.

Further, and this is just MY understanding of Military Intel, you mostly read maps, reports, and look at photos. and then determine what is where and who is there.

things could be a bit different, but that is my very BASIC understanding of your garden variety, low level military intelligence job.

For the most part they do alot of the background stuff while you are in Boot Camp. My Drill Instructors found out the 2nd day of 2nd phase that my Dad work for the Ford Admin and had then White House Red Clarance which at the time ment you could be in the same room with the President. We where on our beach hike when the Series Commander told my Sr DI, it made for a fun morning....

In Intell I would think that you would need to be able to get a Top Secret clearance, which is harder than the Secret clearance Jedi mentioned. One of my bunk mates went to MSG school and a guy from Naval Security interviewed everyone in the section asking all kinds of questions - does he drink alot, talk in his sleep, that kind of thing.

I know that our intell guys, the low ranking ones anyway, ran the unit map room - making sure that the squadron had all the maps that we needed - not a job that I would have wanted! Plus did intell briefings, in my day we had monthly briefings on the Soviet Order of Battle - i.e. what the weapons systems they had and what the capabilities were.

Intel means 1 thing. The office you work in will probably be a vault with only 1 door in or out and no windows.

Your background will be completely checked (credit, driving, school, friends, family, girlfriends, employment, criminal).

S clearance takes about 6 months and TS clearance takes about year. If you decide that the Marines is not for you, most civilian companies that deal with secure material usually pounce on someone that has a govt paid clearance.

Not something most Marines joined to do or even enjoyed doing.
