You are going to have to know (or have access to) a lot of information in order to write a Naval Message. Then you have to have access to DMS (Defense Messaging System).

It might help a little if we knew what your end goal is.

Ok.. Here's a situation where you have to write a response too.
Situation: You received Message DTG 221153ZFEB99 from MALS-31 requestion a World-Wide Search for some items. You conductd the search an didn't find the gear. Wirte the response message ensuring you keep your CHAIN-Of-COMMAND informed.

This message is dated Feb. 22, 1999, and I am assuming you are no longer on active duty (looking at your profile). Contact the s-4 at MALS-31 and ask for instructions...

That is my best guess for you...

No it's just a study question or a made up scenario where you have to write a response to..

I guess airframesguru's answer will do? It gives you the format, you just have to "fill in the blanks" to match your assignment.

If it is not what you are looking for, please try to be as specific as possible... we'll do for ya what we can! :)

Naval Message

A message is an official communication in brief form transmitted by rapid means, such as radio, telegraph, or satellite. A message is used where speed is of primary importance. Naval messages are prepared in accordance with communications instructions and related publications issued by CNO Subject, paragraph, downgrading, and declassification markings used in classified messages are described in OPNAVINST 5510.1. Procedures for drafting and handling messages are furnished by the local communication activity. The USN Plain Language Address Directory (PLAD) lists the abbreviated addresses of activities within the U.S. Navy. The PLAD is a part of the Message Address Directory (MAD), which is an official Joint Chiefs of Staff publication. It is updated four times a year, in January, April, July, and October. The abbreviated addresses listed in the PLAD must be used when drafting messages. The text of the message contains the thought or idea the sender desires to relate. This must be clear, accurate, and concise. Brevity must not be achieved with the loss of accuracy; brevity should be achieved through the proper choice of words and good writing techniques.

The text also includes the standard subject classification code (SSIC). This is a six-digit code starting with the letter “N,” followed by five numbers. The “N” indicates that the numeric group was taken from the Navy list. The five number group is taken from SECNAVINST 5210.11. The SSIC appears after the classification and special handling instructions; for example, UNCLAS EFTO//N04400//. Naval messages are identified by originator and date-time group (DTG). For example, “USS NEVERSAIL” (typed in the From line of the message) is the originator. The DTG “1022332” (10th day at 2233 hours in Zulu time), “OCT 93” (the month and year) will be typed as “102233Z OCT 93.” The “Z” represents Greenwich meantime and is standard throughout DOD. The DTG is assigned by the communication office at the time the message is released. Messages are filed by month in DTG sequence.

Angel: hopefully, someone on this board has 01 Admin experience and can help you with a critique...

I'm just an 1833 Tuna boat skipper who had a Remington Raider (usually a PFC/LCpl) to take me by the hand and lead me through it until I got it right... (Only then would I drop it on the 1st Sgt's desk...)

TracGunny,

not to frequency hop, but what is/was a 1833?

Amphibious Assault Vehicle Crewman, MOS never changes from Pvt to MGySgt - only billet designation; crewman, crewchief, section leader, plt. sgt., plt cmndr. Than the usual MSgt/MGysgt billets - Company Gunny, Bn S - shop chief, etc.

AAVs, Amtracs, LVTs, Triple AV (Advance Amphibious Assault Vehicle - next generation AAV in testing/development), are some of the names that refer to the MOS.

Thats the short answer... LOL

IMRL Marines will use DMS to write the message. It's very much like using email. Naval Messages are not in paper form anymore (unless one of the recipients prints it out). Writing one requires access to DMS.

This is kinda like asking how do I write an email without having access to an email program. You can't do it.

Airwing all the way - supposed to be a 6062 Hydraulics Mech, but never did it. Stayed in the environmental field the whole time. The 500 division was always my favorite. They could make anything - pure geniuses!

alrite say if you fail all the tests to pass as an imrl asset management where would they put you next?

enviro

Failure is not an option - ok, sometimes it is. You could get dropped back a class (called an academic drop) or you could be joining Lake at the School of Infantry.

Angel - what's going on? Is he having trouble at school?

Angel
06-08-04, 02:50 PM
yep he's having trouble

Angel
06-17-04, 11:21 AM
hmm I got no clue.. I guess he wanted to be in Infantry and he got put into an MOS which he has no clue in what he is doing.. But he's doing ok now.. I just hope he'll graduate and hopefully get stationed somewhere near and not Okinawa.. :)..
