I have mixed feelings on meritorious promotions, especially when the time in grade criteria isn't met. (do they still have that?) Combat area promotions aside, I think it leaves room for favoritism and butt kissin to take place & I have a little experience in this meritorious promotion thingie. I arrived in-country RVN in July, as a l/cpl. 3 mos later, I was a Sgt. Normal promotion to cpl, then meritorious promotion to E-5 30 days later, and I didn't see that I did anything nearly spectacular enough to merit the advancement. We all worked the same hrs, flew the same missions, Nobody kissed butt. That crap didn't just didn't fly over there, at least not in my unit. While they said I worked harder than anyone else, I didn't see it that way. We worked as a team, equally sharing the load. The promotion meant I became NCOIC, over a very qualified Marine that made e-4 before I did. 1st thing I did was recommend him for promotion.
