Base identifies 2 Marines killed in Iraq

CAMP PENDLETON ---- Nineteen-year-old Kyle W. Codner and 25-year-old Matthew C. Henderson, both U.S. Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton, were killed Wednesday in Iraq, base officials announced Thursday.

Lance Cpl. Codner was from Wood River, Neb. Cpl. Henderson was from Lincoln, Neb. They were both combat engineers assigned to the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton.

Codner and Henderson were killed in combat in the Al Anbar province of Iraq. The western region of Iraq is where U.S. forces have faced the toughest opposition to the occupation.


Henderson joined the military on Sept. 18, 2000. His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. This was Henderson's second deployment to Iraq.

Codner joined the military less than a year ago, on June 16, 2003. His personal awards include the National Defense Service Medal.

According to the Pentagon, 806 U.S. service personnel have died in Iraq since the war began more than 14 months ago.
