CAMP PENDLETON ---- An Oceanside-based Marine was killed Thursday in a "non-combat related" vehicle accident in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq, Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base and Department of Defense officials said Saturday.

Cpl. Rudy Salas, 20, of Baldwin Park, was a metal worker assigned to the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division of the I Marine Expeditionary Force. His unit is from Camp Pendleton.

A base official said the accident was under investigation, and no further details about the incident were available.

Salas joined the Marine Corps in August 2001. This was his second tour of duty in Iraq.

His personal awards include the Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the base reported.

According to the Defense Department, there have been 792 U.S. military deaths in the Iraq war as of Saturday. The figure includes the deaths of two civilian contractors employed by the department.
