Veterans remember those who served

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.(March 19, 2004) -- People often wonder the answer to the popular question, “If a tree falls down in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it still make a sound?” What about the question, if a person dies and there is no headstone or body, will they be remembered?
The North Carolina State Veterans Administration and the Carolina’s Chapter of the Marine Corps League has found a solution to that very question, and the answer now lies in the North Carolina Veterans Cemetery in front of Camp Johnson.
The administration created a memorial wall for veterans who died and had their remains cremated and scattered or the body was never retrieved.
“This wall is for all the armed services, not just for Marines,” said Mr. George M. Barrows, former commandant of the Onslow County Detachment of the Marine Corps League and the Cemetery Committee Chairman. “As long as the deceased was a veteran, they are eligible to be placed on the wall.”
Each veteran is represented by an 8.5 inch x 5.5 inch bronze plaque that is placed on the wall. It is up to the families of the veterans as to what will be written on the plaque, which is made at no expense to the family.
“Once the plaque is constructed, family can come, if so desired, and have a ceremony for the deceased,” said Barrows. “The SVA funds the plaques and makes all the arrangements. But if the family wants a ceremony, it is up to them to fund whatever cost they run into.”
Families interested in having a plaque made in memory of their family member are asked to contact the cemetery manager, Mr. Ron Taylor at 910-330-6853, for more information.
