MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.(May 13, 2004) -- Officials searched Northeast Creek Thursday afternoon for a Marine reported missing by his wife earlier that morning, base fire officials say.

Private first class Thomas C. Rozensky II, assigned with Headquarters and Support Battalion, Food Service Company, 2nd Force Service Support Group, and on convalescent leave, was reported missing to his unit on the morning of May 13 by his wife, according to a statement released by the Camp Lejeune Public Affairs Office.

Around noon May 13, Rozensky’s vehicle was found eastbound on Highway 24 near Northeast Creek and the Camp Lejeune main gate. Search dogs and underwater search equipment from the Camp Lejeune Fire and Emergency Services were brought in to aid in the search.

“We were requested by NCIS [Naval Criminal Investigative Service] to come out and search the area with underwater search equipment,” said Rob Lewis, an assistant chief with the Fire and Emergency Services based here. “This is blackwater here, so it’s hard to even see your hand in front of you.”

Officials hope images recorded with the sonar search equipment used at Northeast Creek may provide clues to the Marine’s disappearance.

“We will be looking at the data more closely this evening,” Lewis said.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service and Jacksonville Police Department are also involved in the search but were unavailable for comment. Fire Officials say search and rescue efforts will resume tomorrow morning at Northeast Creek.

The search for a local Marine reported missing continued into its second day Friday as investigators looked through remote wooded areas of Camp Lejeune.

Pfc. Thomas C. Rozensky II, 21, of Food Service Company, Headquarters and Support Battalion, 2nd Force Service Support Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, at Camp Lejeune, was last seen about 12:42 a.m. Thursday at his quarters in the Midway Park family housing area, according to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

Rozensky is 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs 161 pounds and was last seen wearing green physical training clothes.

First Lt. Christopher Wilson, spokesman with Camp Lejeune Public Affairs, said Rozensky's wife called military police to report her husband missing Thursday morning.

Base, Jacksonville and Onslow County law enforcement officers on Thursday found Rozensky's 1997 Green Jeep Cherokee near the N.C. 24 bridge over Northeast Creek.

Their search included the use of a Camp Lejeune Fire Department sonar to check the Northeast Creek bottom. Tracking dogs from the Jacksonville Police Department searched along the creek bank and around Rozensky's vehicle.

Investigators received several calls from the public about the case Friday and were following leads that included searching wooded areas aboard the base.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service has at least eight agents working on the case, but it could not comment on whether they obtained useful evidence at or around the vehicle or in the water.

The Cherokee has been released to Rozensky's wife and his name has been entered into the National Crime Information Center data base.

The National Crime Information Center contains information on stolen property, wanted or missing persons.

Investigators have asked that anyone with information about Rozensky's whereabouts contact the base Provost Marshal's Office at 451-2555 or Camp Lejeune's NCIS office at 451-8071.
