This might be a repeat but it's worth it.
I made a few changes...

This is a good read on the 2nd Regiment pior to 1901.
Now reading again, I come away thinking this is a mix bag.
He sites A, B, C companies at the begining...than he sites On 26 March, the 36th, 100th, 148th, and 153d Companies joined the regiment.
On 17 December, the 36th, 57th, 63d, 100th, 148th, and 196th Companies were transferred to the 8th Regiment. With the organization of the Supply Company on 24 January 1920, the 2d Regiment was composed of Field and Staff, Supply, 53d, 54th, 62d, 64th, 153d, and 197th Companies.
He also states that the numbers were still in use up to 1924.
So the change from numbers to letters must have been slow in coming but it happen pior to WW II.
Many books on WW I and the part of the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments part of the 4th Marine Brigade.
State just the Regiments, no companies but these after action reports shows the different companies.
I hope that this would be part of History and Traditons of the Marine Corps.
Because the members of those companies made additions to the glorious history of the Marine Corps

"Retreat Hell, We just got here!"

Next I might be looking to see the history of detachments pior to WW I

Found it on google, now it's out of date at Maxwell Air Force base.
It's a text document done in 1970.
It dealth with the 2nd Marine Regiment, it's history pior to 1901.
I knew that I should have copied it.
I had to trash my computer because some software changed some of my settings.
Windows XP than wouldn't launch, my last resort was to trash it and install Windows 98.
Might have to spend sometime trying to find that article in google.

This is a good read, some of the article deals with the 5th and 6th Marines in World War I.

1st. Lt Clifton Cates USMC was part of the 96th Company 6th Marines which now is Hotel 2nd Battalion 6th Marines.

From Co. "H"
At: ?
Date: July 19. Hour 10:45 am
To: Major [Thomas] Holcomb.

I am in an old abandoned French trench bordering on road leading out from your P.C. and 350 yds. from an old mill. I have only two men out of my company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try and get here as we are swept by machine-gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold.

[Clifton] Cates
2nd Lt. 96 Co.

Here's at the top it has Co. "H"
At the bottom it has 96 Co.
Which was the letter assigned when the 4th Marine Brigade became part of the 2nd US Army Division.
If you notice in that message there are two future Commandants of the Marine Corps...more history trivia...
