View Full Version : What do you think of my target?

I'm thinking of using this to show the new rifle cadets the importance of changing their dope when they get a group off center. Any thoughts? (I couldn't figure out how to make this into a real poll, but bear with me here ;).)

Why? What was the wind? What was the range? Too many variables!

It great!
All you need to do, is explain that variables, such as wind need to be compensate for.
Range seem right on.
If there no wind.
Than moving the strike of the bullet to the left.
Will give you the correct zero of the weapon.
Also those shots are on the right, if they were on the lower right.
We might look for bucking of the shoulder.
Before making an adjustment.
From the grouping, we feel that the shooter has a good idea of Sight Alignment and Sight Picture.
Shooting position appears to be strong.
After those adjustments, this shooter appears well on his or her way to firing High Expert or Expert.
Scores over 235 qualifies as High Expert.
Thanks for taking the time to teach those rifle cadets.

Certainly not least...
.. why 2 groups (as if 1 is a group).
Personal opinion.... I would NOT make a dope adjustment off that group:
Which shot was the Bull... 1, 2, or 3 ??
Was the Bull a pulled shot?? IT is the only one different.
Did the wind change?? A right wind may account for the 2, or a left wind may account for the Bull.
Personal practice: I don't make a dope change to ANYTHING that is not grouped, then move the CENTER of the group.
Are you using shooting cards (like Boot Camp) to SEE your shot and place impact ??
But..... if that is a 6 inch target at 1000 meters....
Terry :D
The first two shots where the ones on the right, and the one in center mass was the 3rd shot. The reason I know that it was not a pulled shot is because I changed dope after the 2nd shot. I showed it to my fellow cadets and their performance increased dramatically. Only a few cadets are still screwing up though :(. I was coaching one cadet who was shooting a shotgun pattern on the target and took his rifle away. I used his dope to see if I could get a group in offhand and had a group so tight it looked like 1 shot with 2 little extensions :). Major was watching me do this and laughed. When I showed him the target afterward he says me loud enough for the cadet to hear, "it's not the gun that’s for damned sure...it's the nut behind the trigger that concerns me!" LOL!
