CAMP PENDLETON – Three Marines will be recognized at Camp Pendleton by the Secretary of the Navy on Monday for heroism during the fighting in Iraq.

Sgt. Marco A. Martinez, 22, of Las Cruces, N.M., will receive the Navy Cross for extraordinary valor during the battle of At Tarmiya on April 12, 2003.

The Navy Cross is a combat-only decoration second only to the Medal of Honor.

Staff Sgt. Adam R. Sikes, 27, of Aliso Viejo, will receive the Silver Star for gallantry for his actions at At Tarmiya.

Cpl. Timothy C. Tardif, 22, of Huntington Beach, also will receive the Silver Star for gallantry during an ambush in Iraq.

The town of At Tarmiya, about 18 miles north of Baghdad, was the site of a battle between Marines and Fedayeen fighters.

The Silver Star is the third-highest combat decoration. The Marines were assigned to 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton.
