Marksman shoots finger off

By Laura Bailey
Times Staff Writer

A highly skilled marksman shot off his finger during a shooting match at Stone Bay Rifle Range at Camp Lejeune, N.C., on April 23, said spokesmen for Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C.
The lance corporal, whose name was not released, was competing in a Marine Corps Rifle and Pistol Match event when he shot off his left index finger with a .45 caliber pistol, said Master Sgt. Terence Peck, a spokesman for MCAS Beaufort, where the injured Marine is stationed.

The lance corporal was immediately taken to the Camp Lejeune naval hospital, where doctors reattached his finger, said Capt. Don Caetano, another air station spokesman.

The Marine, who is with Marine Air Control Squadron 2, Detachment A, Marine Air Control Group 28, is expected to make a full recovery, Caetano said.

The spokesmen said the incident is under investigation and would not discuss details. They said the investigation will take 30 days to complete.

The Marine Corps Rifle and Pistol Match competition brings together some of the Corps’ best marksmen. It was not clear whether the injured Marine was competing in an individual or team category.

Gun safety presenter shoots self
CNN Saturday, May 1, 2004 (http://edition.cnn.com/2004/US/South/05/01/dea.shooting.ap/index.html)

ORLANDO, Florida (AP) -- A federal drug agent shot himself in the leg during a gun safety presentation to children in what police describe as an accident. His bosses, however, are still investigating the incident.

The Drug Enforcement Administration agent, whose name was not released, was speaking April 9 to about 50 adults and students organized by the Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association, witnesses and police said.

He drew his .40-caliber duty weapon and removed the magazine, according to the police report. He then pulled back the slide and asked an audience member to look inside the gun and confirm it wasn't loaded.

Witnesses said when the agent released the slide, one shot fired into the top of his left thigh. The gun was pointed at the floor.

The agent was treated at Orlando Regional Medical Center and returned to work, a DEA official said.

That's why you never trust anyone else to verify your weapon is clear! What a dumbass. Sounds like that weapon needs to go to an armorer too, as it should never fire by just releasing the slide! Maybe clean that thing? :D

I am really tempted to make a cheap comment at the expense of our Air Wing Marines and the correct use of the .45 cal......

I'd be willing to bet though the digit in question was the chief "nose picking digit".....

"our Air Wing Marines " have won the competition many times at Stone Bay. This guy was an Air Traffic Controller - probably very high stressed.
