POLE-E CHARKHI, Afghanistan (April 8, 2004) -- Retired Gunnery Sgt. R. Lee Ermey, host of the History Channel show, “Mail Call”, visited the Marines of the Afghanistan National Army Training Detachment April 8.

The 14 Marines of the detachment deployed from various Training and Education Command billets throughout the United States, 5 months ago. They are assigned as embedded trainers to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Brigade: the Afghan National Army Quick Reaction Force Commando Battalion.

The Marines and Emery shared noon chow together in the Camp Blackhorse chow hall and discussed their deployment and involvement with the Afghan National Army soldiers.

Ermey was visiting Afghanistan for a period of 10 days to help promote the military in a positive manner and highlight the ongoing community enhancement projects in the local area and throughout the region.

“We so often hear news reports of the negative aspects about the job the US military is doing here and in Iraq,” Ermy said.

“We want the American people to know the good we are doing in this war torn region.”

Ermey spent most of the day on the weapons ranges test firing the Soviet block weapon systems used by the ANA. “I am surprised by their simplicity and accuracy,” he said. He plans to feature his facts and findings about the weapons in an episode that will air in early May.
