Terrorists observed using ambulance to transport weapons
Marines inside Fallujah today observed terrorist forces using ambulances to transport weapons.
Marines in the city witnessed an ambulance back up to a mosque inside Fallujah. Occupants from the vehicle subsequently carried weapons into the mosque. In a similar incident, another ambulance parked in front of a building and weapons were taken inside the structure.
By using ambulances, they are putting Iraqis in harm’s way by denying them a critical component of urgent medical care. Mosques, ambulances and hospitals are protected under Geneva Convention agreements and are not targeted by U.S. Marines. However, once they are used for the purpose of hostile intent toward Coalition Forces, they lose their protected status and may be targeted.
Enemy action today also threatened civilian medical care to the Iraqis. About noon today, two enemy mortar rounds impacted inside the Jordanian Hospital compound in Fallujah. Two Jordanian citizens were injured. The Jordanian Hospital is one of the few sites around Fallujah where civilians are able to seek medical treatment.
Also in Fallujah, Marines discovered a large weapons cache. Marines recovered the following:
One SA-7 missile, ready to fire
Two Russian sniper rifles with scopes
23 mm anti-aircraft ammunition
Four 155 mm artillery rounds rigged as an improvised explosive device
Improvised rocket launchers
Nine 85 mm rockets
Marines destroyed the following in the same cache discovery:
30 60 mm rockets
150 pounds of PE4
8 155 mm artillery rounds
15 82 mm mortars
47 rocket-propelled grenades
100 pounds of TNT
Soldiers from the Army’s 112th Military Police Battalion serving with the 1st Marine Division detained 14 suspected terrorists after stopping them along a road in the vicinity of Fallujah. Soldiers confiscated the following:
10 AK-47 rifles
28 AK-47 magazines
Two bolt-action rifles
One pistol
100 rounds of various calibers
Mixed military uniforms
Intelligence documents
Marines near Fallujah also observed a possible mortar site with vehicles and engaged the enemy there. They killed one terrorist and injured another five.
Marines conducted a cordon of a house in Fallujah and discovered and IED and weapons cache. They detained three suspected terrorists after finding the following:
Cell phone connected to a battery by wires
TNT
20 electric blasting caps
Bomb making material
Two RPG launchers
Eight RPG rounds
