OCEAN CITY -- Lt. Col. Ronald Harrington, Snow Hill High School Marine Corps Jr. ROTC instructor, was named Worcester County's Teacher of the Year for 2004 Friday night, but declined to take full credit, thanking instead "team Snow Hill" for his success.

A U.S. Marine Corps retiree, Harrington said his favorite Marine Corps trait is integrity, defined as "upright, honest and truthful," but that presented a dilemma because he couldn't take full credit for the Teacher of the Year honor.

"I can't accept as an individual but I can and will accept as a proud member of team Snow Hill," he said.

Harrington was among 14 nominees for the annual award, presented at the conclusion of a banquet at The Clarion in Ocean City. Before making the announcement, Marion Butler, president of the Worcester County Board of Education, said: "And the winner is, all the kids in Worcester County."

Harrington was presented with citations from Gov. Robert Ehrlich, Senate and House of Representatives, presented by Del. D. Page Elmore, 38-A. Worcester County Commissioner President John "Sonny" Bloxom presented a commendation from the commissioners.

Harrington also thanked his wife, Maggie, his assistant at school, Snow Hill High School faculty and staff, his students and Janet Tull, a parent of a Snow Hill High student, who recommended he be nominated for the award.

The Teacher of the Year receives a Ford car leased free for one year, a laptop computer, an educational trip of his choice, a trophy, a pin, dinner for two at a local restaurant and a trip to Baltimore for the state educational events.

Also nominated were Barbara Dittrich, Snow Hill Middle School; Susan Bashore, Buckingham Elementary School; Joann L. Harvey, Stephen Decatur High School; Rebecca Davis, Ocean City Elementary School; Belinda A. Gulyas, Cedar Chapel Special School; Selena Lyons, Berlin Intermediate School; Tracy Palmer, Worcester Career and Technology Center; Beth Shockley-Lynch, Snow Hill Elementary School; Patrick A. Lieb, Stephen Decatur Middle School; Kimberly King, Pocomoke Elementary School; Edna Wright, Pocomoke Middle School; Rebecca Kalchthaler, Pocomoke High School; and Aaron Dale, Showell Elementary School.

The keynote address was given by Pocomoke High's Carvel LaCurts, who was the 2003 Teacher of the Year.
