BAGHDAD, Iraq — In a scene of triumph and jubilation televised live throughout the world, Iraqi citizens in the heart of Baghdad -- with help from U.S. Marines -- toppled a huge statue of Saddam Hussein and began dancing on it Wednesday.

After hearing the news about independence on July 9, 1776, people in New York City celebrated by pulling down a statue of the King they had come to view as a tyrant.

That it is interesting, but it's also worth noting that the Russians pulled down statues of Stalin and Lenin and their lot has not improved very much.

Perhaps true on a personal economic scale, but not true regarding civil liberties, political criticism, free speech, travel, open source media, investment opportunities, elections, etc. The chances of being whisked off to Siberia for 20 yrs has also all but dis-appeared.
