Marine killed near Ramadi, Iraq

By Bryant Jordan

A Marine was killed by hostile fire Monday during operations near Ramadi, Iraq, Pentagon officials announced early Tuesday morning.
That death brings to five the total number of Marines killed in action since I Marine Expeditionary Force returned to Iraq for a seven-month rotation.

Killed was Lance Cpl. Andrew S. Dang, 20, of Foster City, Calif. He was assigned to 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Four other Marines, all with I MEF elements from the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif., also have been killed in the past week.

The Pentagon on Monday said Cpl. David M. Vicente, 25, of Methuen, Mass., was killed Friday during operations in Hit, Iraq. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment.

The day before, Cpl. Andrew D. Brownfeld, 24, of Summit, Ohio. Brownfeld, a member of Marine Wing Support Squadron 374 at Twentynine Palms, died as a result of wounds incurred in a mortar attack at Asad Air Base in Anbar province, west of Baghdad. Brownfeld “was participating in security and stability operations when the attack occurred,” the officials said in a statement.

Insurgents killed two other Marines last Wednesday in Qaim, which also is in Anbar — a province that stretches from Baghdad to the Jordanian border.

The Marines, Pfcs. Brandon C. Smith, 20, of Washington, Ark., and Ricky A. Morris Jr., 20, of Lubbock, Texas, were on patrol when they came under attack, defense officials said. The two were assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment.

A force of 25,000 Marines with I MEF is deployed to Iraq for the first of two planned seven-month rotations, taking over for elements of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division in the area west of Baghdad. The first rotation is expected to conclude in September, with the second slated to end in March 2005.
