CAMP PENDLETON ---- With sore feet and heavy backpacks, some 600 Marine infantrymen stopped at a military training beach at dawn Wednesday for a service to honor the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks.

The battalion of reservists, two miles shy of completing an overnight 23-mile combat hike, gathered in front of a sandbagged podium at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base's Red Beach to hear their commander speak of the symbolism of last year's events in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.

"This hour, the first plane was hitting the first tower of the World Trade Center," said Col. Kent W. Bradford, pausing to contain his emotions. "And we sat and watched the TV with our families and our children as 3,000 of our countrymen were murdered by cowards.
