They started lining up at 6:30 a.m. and eventually the crowd grew to about 200 children and spouses who huddled under an awning to avoid early morning rain.
They were waiting for Backyard Boutique to open.
For $1, each family of a Marine staff sergeant or Navy petty officer first class or below could fill a standard plastic grocery shopping bag with children's clothes, toys and soaps.
The event is one of many sponsored by the Camp Lejeune Young Men's Christian Association at Midway Park to help families of active-duty junior enlisted troops make ends meet.
