Lawmakers propose amendment to Calif. consitution to lower voting age to 14 for state elections

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A proposed amendment to California's constitution would give 16-year-olds a half-vote and 14-year-olds a quarter-vote in state elections.

State Sen. John Vasconcellos, among four lawmakers to propose the idea on Monday, said the Internet, cellular phones, multichannel television and a diverse society makes today's teens better informed than their predecessors.

The idea requires two-thirds approval by the Legislature to appear on the November ballot.

"When we gave the vote to those who didn't own property, then to women, then to persons of all colors, we added to the richness of our democratic dialogue and our own nation's integrity and its model for the world," Vasconcellos said, calling it time to further extend the vote.

A Republican colleague said it was "the nuttiest idea I've ever heard."

Said Assemblyman Ray Haynes: "There's a reason why 14-year-olds and 16-year-olds don't vote. They are not adults. They are not mature enough. They are easily deceived by political charlatans."

Student supporters said the idea could give them a say in issues such as education funding and bring new voices to the California electorate.

"If we could vote, politicians would see us as votes, not just kids, and they would take our issues seriously," said Robert Reynolds, a student at Berkeley High School.

Sorry, but if he can't attend a field-trip without a signed permission slip, he can't vote for MY governmental leadership...

This state is the most rediculous place I have ever pitched my tent. The next things will be to legalize all dope and lower the drinking age to 12. That way all the children who discover they are gay at 10, while hitting the pipe, can toss back a few to kill the pain of their revelation while deciding on voting for Hillary in 2008. What is this place coming to?

Wait... If California does that, then Massachusetts is going to lower the age to 10!!!! and we'll add 10 cents more to the gas tax!!! (in very very small print) That'll show them left coast weenies!!!!

Never under-estimate the willingness of the Left Coasters to go "above and beyond" and make it 10 to start with. And so far, GubNah Ahnold (whom I voted for), has not spoken up on this issue. He did, however, say he was not opposed to gay marriages.

I think I may move to CA. I have a dog who I think should have a right to vote, she can talk and she is over 70 years old, She doesn't believe in Gay marriages, is a confirmed Republican dog, is pro life, snarls eveytime she sees a picture of Senator John Kerry, doesn't like Senator Ted Kennedy thinks that he is too fat and full of crap, growls at all of the war protesters and she waves the American Flag, born in the USA and she is proud of it. OOHRAH, SEMPER FI or what ever.

If this stupid idea ever becomes reality, then California will be doomed. You'll have a government run by MTV poll charts. The last time I heard of kids being put in charge of government, it was...

If your dog moved here, it would be hated because of the Conservative sway. There are so few of us Conservatives, in the open anyway, here.

In that case she would bring three more conservatives to CA. Look like you could use some help.

My dog is a loveably little dog, I don't think that anyone could hate her.

My dad told me that now they are actually voting not to have gay marriages in Mass. That made me a little bit happeir that I'm from there. But Kerry and Kennedy make me sick. Garsh Darn Liberals.
