New York's most-famous G.I. — and he doesn't know it!
Local soldier makes cover of Time

HARRISON, N.Y. — The man on the cover of the current issue of Time magazine has no idea that his face is gracing newsstands all over the country, his parents say.
Marine Cpl. Patrick Gravenese, 24, has been on duty in Afghanistan since October. A photograph of him in full combat gear, patrolling the mountains near Pakistan, is being used to illustrate Time’s story on “Afghanistan, The Other War: Inside the U.S. Campaign to Pacify the Country and Snare Osama bin Laden.”
Gravenese’s parents, Patrick and Lynda Gravenese of Harrison, said he told them he was interviewed by Time but knew nothing about the cover photo on the March 8 issue.
“We are flabbergasted,” his father told The Journal News in Monday editions. “The cover of Time is reserved for presidents, generals, even Jesus Christ.”
Gravenese’s fiancee, Laura Damiano, 24, said, “When he hears he’s on the cover of Time, he’s going to be ecstatic.” Gravenese has been homesick, she said, and “This will really cheer him up.”
The couple has been engaged since Valentine’s Day, when Gravenese e-mailed Damiano a photo of him holding a sign that said, “Will you marry me?”
