NEW YORK(February 27, 2004) -- Community members from Washington Heights remembered their neighbor, Riayan A. Tejeda, for his service to America. Tejeda immigrated from the Dominican Republic to Washington Heights, N.Y. as a kid, and he joined the Marine Corps after high school.

Staff Sgt. Tejeda was killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom on April 11th, 2003. He was shot after coming to the aid of another Marine during a firefight northeast of Baghdad. The southwest corner of the intersection of Nicholas Avenue and 180th Street is now Staff Sergeant Riayan Agusto Tejeda Street.
