NEW YORK - The New York Times endorsed John Kerry in the state's upcoming Democratic presidential primary, saying the Massachusetts senator "exudes maturity and depth." (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040226/ap_on_el_pr/kerry_times_endorsement_1)

As much as I like to see John F. Kerry support, why are newspapers endorsing any candidate? I'm sure there are plenty of Texas newspapers endorsing re-electing George W. Bush. Fair unbiased journalism? Did Ben Franklin endorse Washington, Adams, or Jefferson?

I believe it is because the equal time laws only apply to broadcasting, whether radio or television. The print media can finagle page placement of candidates, then claim to meet the new "standards" without any punitive damages to their image.
