The Leathernecks Motorcycle Club included this in the monthly newsletter last year. If I remember correctly, 8th and I Marines volunteer to go and clean this every morning. The other services were never touched.... until the story was in the newsletter. A Corpsman in the club went down and cleaned the Navy side.
Come to reunion 2004...
and get the chance to shine it yourself :marine:

Just another reason why Honor Courage Commitment is more than just words to the Marines..it's a way of life.
I am one of the 8th and I Marines that would run my squad down there and shine the emblem... Then one day we all got in trouble by a park ranger, he said it wasn't legal to put brasso on government property... I think he was former army or something. So from then on we did night ops... Get the picture.

SgtJ:
What sort of knucklehead was that park ranger? He couldn't have been in the service, or he would have realized that everything in the military is Government Property. We were ISSUED Brasso in Boot Camp. I was never given anything I wasn't expected to use. We were ISSUED brass belt buckles, and told to take the quartermaster off of them. That forced us to shine the brass.
Try explaining to the company Top why your brass isn't shined before the Regimental C.O begins inspection. He would give you "Park Ranger" where the sun don't shine, all the way to the Article 15 hearing.
The same goes for the Dress Blue Uniform, with all its brass buttons as well as the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor posted on the dress cover.
What about all those brass items onboard Naval vessels? Are they supposed to be left to turn green?
The ranger was just being an A**hole. By the way, did you guys use camo sticks on your faces and hands for the night forays? Sounds like a blast.
Thanks SgtJ....
For 'keeping our honor clean'... AND shined

SgtJ,
If a park ranger would have to me that I would have told him that the uniform that I wear has brass and it is government property and BRASSO is authorized. What are they going to do arrest you for preserving a natioanl memorial? What a dumbass. (The Park Ranger) not you SgtJ. Good job on the night ops. Outstanding...!!!

Hey everyone,
Sorry to get ya'll so fired up over the park ranger, I am sure he was out of line but it would have been wrong for me to make a scene right there with all those people walking the wall. At 8th and I (as I am sure many of you know) you walk a fine line. If one little (Marine related) thing happens, it ends up on the Commandants desk by 1600. I knew what I had to do since the PR was being a A$$H@@@. Besides in motivated the hell out of my marines to run the night ops. They felt as though they were getting away with something. (I guess we did.)

The way that our Park Service works, rule and regulation are carried out almost to the letter. Could it be that whoever polish the base of the flag pole at the Viet Nam Veterans memorial, Washington DC must polish all of it? The Park Service should have this responsibility, maybe if enough of us write to them they will make sure that it will be polish at least once a week. But don't put down the Park Rangers, my son worked for the Park Service for 5 years and was a damn good Ranger. He also is a veteran

I sent this email to the Park Service webmaster@parkranger.com
.This is in a response that I read from a Marine Forum, that a detachment of Marines who went and polished the Marine Corps area on the base of the flag pole at the Viet Nam memorial, was told by one of the Park Rangers that they couldn't polish it. In my opinion the Park Service should have the responsibly to keep the base polished, if not ,then the Services that it represents should be allowed to polish their area. If this isn't the right place to email this, then I would appreciate a reply to the email address that I should address this to.
Thanking you in advance.
Sincerely,

I will check with a guy in that area to see which dept. has responsibility there. The Ranger was probably not exercising good judgement and thought he was protecting it. Judgement and the latitude to exercise it properly is hard to find sometimes.

I set that picture as my computer desktop background. My wife asked me, "Why don't they go ahead in polish the rest of them?" I laughed so hard...

My son and I have made several trips in the last three years to "The Wall" and have visited the flag pole and seen this bright and polished section of the base too. It gives one--the Marine--a very special feeling to stand there and understand what that shine represents. It also taught my 10 year old son just a bit about Marine Corps pride and honor. A lesson not easily seen on most days.
S/F !!
I wonder what would have happened if you had shined the whole thing. Might show up some of the other services. Make them feel a little bad. Maybe. Just my two cents worth.

That is motivating. I'm actually about to go to visit D.C. on April 20th. I go there every year with my parents as a sort of birthday present for myself. I'll definitely make a point to go look at the flagpole and see how it's being maintained these days. I'll take a picture and post it here for all of you.

Saw it a couple of years ago on very hot humid day in July. Our emblem was polished and shining bright. It made this Gunny very proud to know that our brothers care enough to do this. :iwo:
Also, the same day I was standing in line to buy some refreshments, and a currently serving Marine (saw my hat) and asked when and where I served. We talked for a little while, he then shook my hand thanked me for my service and parted with a Semper Fi! That meant more to me coming from a fellow Marine then anybody else.:flag:
