A Yuma-based Marine was awarded the Bronze Star Medal recently for his professional performance while serving in Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Michael A. Turner was honored in part for his performance as noncommissioned officer in charge of the Coalition Press Information Center, Combined Joint Task Force Seven in Baghdad, Iraq, but also for his poise under fire when a hotel where he was staying came under fire.

Turner, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron at the Marine Corps Air Station, was awarded the prestigious medal "for exceptional meritorious performance of duty during Operation Iraqi Freedom," according to the citation for the award. "His outstanding dedication to duty during ground combat in Iraq contributed to the overwhelming success of Victory Corps."

Brig. Gen. Willie Williams, assistant deputy commandant of Marine Corps Installations and Logistics, came to MCAS to present the award to Turner.

In this case, based upon the information provided here it looks like the Marine Corps took a page from the Army "Reduce the value manual".

Meritorious performance has in the past earned the Commandation Award, an award that is well respected.

Now we are looking at a "Bronze Star" for meritorious service?

It used to be:
Marine Corps---"Good job Marine".
Army---"Good job, here's a Bronze Star".

Tell me it ain't true!!
