The Public Affairs Office of the USMC in Okinawa announced Tuesday that the deployment of Marine Corps units to Iraq has begun by the same day. The units will be deployed in batches, including the departure of about 300 Marines from the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines on Feb 19 using aircraft from Kadena Air Base.
More than ten CH53 transport helicopters flew in to Kadena Air Base. They were lined up with their rotors taken off near a maintenance facility on the south side of the runway to receive preparation for the transportation.
The USMC admitted that helicopters from 465th Helicopter Squadron and the 169th light attack helicopter squadron that are stationed on MCAS Futenma with UDP and said, "The specific number of the aircrafts has not been revealed."
In addition to 3/4, total of about 3,000 Marines, including 1/5 will be deployed to Iraq with the scheduled period of seven months. The names and the scales of the units that have been deployed so far have not been revealed. The USMC is scheduled to complete the deployment within the coming weeks.
