Kerry Denounced U.S. as 'The Real Criminal' in Vietnam

During his war protest days in the early 1970s, Democratic presidential front-runner John Kerry once denounced the United States of America as "the real criminal" in the Vietnam War.

In comments first reported by the New York Times 33 years ago, Kerry condemned the entire country as "criminal" during a 1971 demonstration on Wall Street, a few weeks after the trial of Lt. William Calley.

"Guilty as Lieutenant Calley may have been of the actual act of murder, the verdict does not single out the real criminal ... the United States of America," railed the future Democratic presidential hopeful.

The damning comment was unearthed by the Baltimore Sun, which reprinted Kerry's outburst in its Saturday edition exactly as quoted above.

The Sun also revisited other anti-war comments by Kerry that have yet to receive significant exposure, including remarks Kerry uttered on NBC's "Meet the Press" a few weeks after the Wall Street protest.

"I committed the same kinds of atrocities as thousands of others," he told the network, "in that I shot in free-fire zones, fired .50-caliber machine bullets, used harass-and-interdiction fire, joined in search-and-destroy missions and burned villages."

Though NBC has the Kerry interview on tape, it has so far declined to broadcast his revealing comments.

The Sun also obtained reactions from two of Kerry's Swift Boat mates in Vietnam, who told the paper they were deeply disturbed by his anti-war activities.

Kerry crewman James Wasser said he was "absolutely upset" over his former commanding officer's claims that the U.S. committed wartime atrocities as a matter of course.

Saying he recalled no such war crimes, Wasser said of Kerry, "I felt betrayed."

Shipmate Bill Zaladonis was also offended by Kerry's claims. "I didn't like the idea [of Kerry condemning his fellow servicemen]," he told the Sun.

"I certainly didn't believe that all Vietnam veterans were baby-killing women rapers. Most people I know agree with me - they didn't see it."

While Wasser and Zaladonis remain troubled by Kerry's anti-war past, they're split over whether they intend to support him for president.

"I'm still studying it," Zaldonis told the Sun, while Wasser occasionally campaigns for the Massachusetts Democrat.

What the ? If THESE two guys are having doubts as to whom to vote for I know they must be Democrats with their blinders on again. Glad I missed Kerry's daughter!

Hey Dave,
That was great seeing Lee yesterday, I'm in great hopes that the photos turned out. Mostly, that my schedule allows me to make it to more meetings (gotta get my $25 worth). Tell Mr. Black***** thank you very much for the breakfast treat. The neat thing was, last night we turned on the tube and My 5 year old said, "Daddy, there's your friend", and the fact we got home and we put all three kiddos in bed for 2 hours. Now that was something to celebrate. Semper Fi! Bro!

Hey Gunny. I find in intesting to note NBC was sitting on the Kerry tapes. They have to know they possess these comments.

Kerry gets a free pass, while the President has his dental fillings checked to make sure he was serving in his ANG capacity.

I'd like to know what a swift boat commander was doing leaving his vessel, and participating in search and destroy missions, and Zippo parties. Was he a boat commander or a grunt? The Navy should investigate whether "Lt." Kerry committed war crimes while away from his boat, or if leaving his command (the boat) constituted a deriliction of duty, punishable by a courts martial. It would be fitting if this happened, and Kerry had all his blouse candy taken away.

As for the two former shipmates of Kerry's, they deserve what they get if they can't see they were included in Kerry's "criminal" blanket charge. If some Marine I'd served under had made the statements Kerry made, I would punch his lights out, and never consider giving the creep my vote.

...meanwhile back in Texas. "Daddy, can you get me in the 187th Air Guard?"

"Why son, there's 500 young Americans waiting for a slot in the 187th!"

"Well no sh*t Daddy! They fly the old F-106s, they'll never send those to Vietnam! Its those F-105s they want for combat."

"What about my campaign, son? Won't the Guard interfere with you helping with that?"

"Daddy! Its the Guard, not the Foriegn Legion, I'll be there."

"Awright, I'll make some calls and bump you to the top!"

Pres. GW Bush - from an interview a day or two after 9/11/2001

How would you have handled being in command that day and the days that followed?

I would have done my job. North, South, left, right, sailor, airman, Marine...we are talking about the Presidency. To the voting public, our service is just a line on a job resume.

Bill was in England smoking dope. George Sr. served as VP to one of our greatest Presidents. He went on to be a Wartime President. George Sr. was shot down on a combat mission. The voters still picked Bill.

That's really what ****es me off. I agree with BigEagle6, if we didn't have the Brotherhood, we'd all be nutzoid! :marine:

I hear you loud and clear, yellowwing.

You're right. The American voting public is fickle. But, thats what we fought to protect, the right of each voter to be informed or stupid, whichever they chose. Its not our call to force anyone's vote. Just to convince those we can, of the values we hold dear, and the reasons we hold them so.

You and I, and all the rest of the men and women here, all did our parts. We gave honorable service and upheld our sworn Oaths. Thats the best we can do. The rest is up to the good judgement of US voters. Hang in there brother.
