Noise from 14 Marine Corps jets flying off on deployment rattled some San
Diegans on Friday morning.
Miramar Marine Corps Air Station dispatched 12 F/A-18 Hornet jet fighters
and two KC-10 cargo planes full of support personnel and equipment between
10 a.m. and 11 a.m.
The planes flew in two groups, with six fighters accompanying each cargo
plane.
The squadron, the "Bats" of VMFA-242, left on a routine deployment to an
undisclosed location, said Cpl. Rob Henderson, a Miramar spokesman.
That many planes flying out at once probably caused more noise than nearby
residents are accustomed to hearing, Henderson said. The squadron flew west
from Miramar's flight line to the ocean, crossing over La Jolla.
One University City resident, Charles Reilly, said the sound was
"thunderous."
"It was enough to get me off the computer, out of my office and running out
to see," he said.
Miramar reported receiving calls from people asking about the noise.
