After serving a week of extra duty for NJP. The Company Gunny still thought I had too much idle time on my hands. I was summarily 'volunteered' for base color guard detail.
One appearance was dedicating a war memorial in a local Georgia state park. It was sponsored by the American Legion.
Everything was going fine and dandy. While we were turned and facing the audience for the National Anthem, a photographer was busy snapping away. To get a good verticle shot, he took off his cap, exposing his little bald head.
Just at that time one those giant Georgia pine cones comes crashing down on his head! This softball size missile cuts a small bloody furrow across his little bald head. I thought I was going to lose it and bust out laughing! I had to start thinking about plane crashes to keep my bearing. :o
After the cermonies the Legion took us back to their hall for lunch and beers. It was great listening to all their sea stories, (and eating their food and drinking their beer). The hospitality was first rate.
