Recently I've run into a bit of a problem........here goes. After being active for four years I've decided to go into the reserves. Come to find out that before I can go into a unit I have to have my tattoo's "approved". I have 6. Mostly marine, and tribles. Any body else had any problems with this? I was told that I could be denied solely on this even though I got every single one while active.

I got out of the corps during x-mas of 89. I had attempted to go reserves also. However, my Tats played a crucial role reguarding my attituted toward certain parts of our illustrious Corps.
I found most of the obstacles involved political correctness. Image, stereo typing, Ect:
Being a former force recon/anglico marine I, needless to say, have never been a politition our concerned about what the average person thinks or feels about me.
Anyway, there are reserve units out there that don't mind your Tats, as long as they are not offensive toward others.
Then again, define offensive.
Don't throw away your marine corps carreer over a Tattoo.

Just to ease anyone's mind, I'm still attempting to go reserve, got an appointment to have my tattoo's photographed and looked at and approved. It's just realy annoying that the only reason that I haven't been put in a unit yet is due to a tattoo thing.

According to the paperwork I've looked at it should be ok, but I think that something needs to be done as far as telling other marines that tattoos are now an issue. All I knew was not on the neck or below the wrist. If the corps wants to regulate this kind of stuff they need to start telling boots, " hey if you do this we may not take you back in" that way others don't have to run into this blind like I have.

Seems as if you don't want to go into the service, get a lot of tattoo's; them if they start the draft up again you will be rejected; or would you?

I'm 55 now and I never got a tat knowing what the Marine Corps had to say about it and what Mom (a nurse) had to say,and still says, but I have given them (tats) a thought or two even still.

I'd cover it up with something else, less painful that getting one undone! Idea is not to tat women on the arm!

I love all my tats in fact I'd like to get a couple more, only got to sign a form saying that I won't get anymore while in the reserve bit. OH Well!

Cook...."ex wives" as in more than one ?? Or is it "wife"...

I liked Super Dave's comment.."tattoo SUCKS underneath it..."

I would never put a wife(s) name anywhere on the bod...I have one bod and have had two wives..NEVER AGAIN ! Eat the 9mm first.

I once also knew a woman who had "Bob" tat'd on one boob and "Bill" on the other boob. One day "Bob" had been clearly dug out with a razor ! Not sure if that was the work of "Bill" or the woman...either way I never saw my name tat'd anywhere on her bod--and I did look all over--but just as well. I would hate to think I was exsized out with a razor blade !

Reminds me of a conversation I heard years ago amongst a group of girls.

They were all "sexually active" and berating the one who was still a virgin. Her comment was, "You may be right, but I am still one up on you. I can change my mind any time I want to."

What does this have to do with tattoos; that she (the virgin) could still get a tattoo? Or get ------.

I had my exwife's name on my arm and the current wife got sick of looking at it. I suggested having #1 tattood next to it, then #2 and her name, in case there were any more. She vetoed that idea real quick! So, I got another tattoo covering up the name. Problem solved.

I couldn't afford the damn laser removal at the time and it was driving me nuts.. now I got a scar that is more relationship appropriate.... ("how'd you get that scar hun?"...."huh oh that? well remember my ex wife I told ya about, yeah it was an ugly divorce and to make a long story short she was related to charlie manson...")

I have one, on my arm I would like to get laser removed.

Its my ex-wives name, and been there for over 35 years, anyone have any experience in tattoo removals?

Tattoo Customers in 3 States Get Infections
AP ^ | 6/22/6 | MIKE STOBBE

A worrisome superbug seen in prisoners and athletes is also showing up in people who get illegal tattoos, federal health officials said Thursday.

Forty-four tattoo customers in Ohio, Kentucky and Vermont developed skin infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The infections occurred in 2004 and 2005, and were traced to 13 unlicensed tattoo artists, according to an article in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

These are the first documented cases if tattoo-related MRSA infections, said Dr. Mysheika LeMaile-Williams, a CDC infectious disease investigator who co-authored the report.

MRSA is an antibiotic-resistant bacteria that fights off the body's immune system and destroys tissues. The community-associated variety, seen in the tattoo infections, has been diagnosed in otherwise healthy athletes, military recruits and prison inmates.

The skin infections can be transmitted from person to person by contact with draining sores, or through contact with contaminated items or surfaces. MRSA generally causes mild skin infections, but in some cases has led to pneumonia, bloodstream infections, and a painful, flesh-destroying condition called necrotizing fasciitis.

Clusters of MRSA cases were seen in Ohio in June 2004, November 2004 and April 2005, involving 33 people. A four-person cluster was reported in Kentucky in May 2005 and a seven-person cluster was in Vermont in August.

Four of the patients were hospitalized, but all recovered, LeMaile-Williams said.

Ohio, Kentucky and Vermont require licensing for tattoo artists, but all the affected customers went to unlicensed artists. Instead of doing the work in tattoo parlors, the body art was done in the homes of the tattooists or the recipients, or even in public places such as a park.

I saw the series SgtMaj running PT at SD when my nephew graduated 2 years ago, he was damn near "sleeved" and both legs covered!

I have a few tats, one of them being on my right forearm...I'm reenlisting in the Corps as I write this, and the Corps hasn't said a word about it. So I wonder why the reserves has such a hard-on for it. (92 days until reporting for active duty again...Cpl. Stutts rides again!!!)

Since there has been an uproar about what certain Tatoos mean the Military as a whole has set rules adn regs on tatoos. There are some that have surfaced that are gang related or racially incriminating. Such as the Southern Flag, MS13, QDog, and many others. There was a slide show presentation on it that was rather long. It had details and pics on the most noticible tats that were being found. Also the Jail-house Tats were at the top of the list. If you have a home-made tat that even resembles a jailhouse tat it will come under this rule and reg that you could be denied entry in any branch of service. Hell I have a Viking Skull and helm, a Scorpion, a broken heart, the number " 13 ", a cross, and a series of dots that I was asked about. Yet as others have noted there are SgtMajs' that are sleeved and officers that have tats that are not shown unless wearing certain appearal taht are not questioned about thiers. I can't remember the exact reg but you can find it when looking up paans, sans, and taans, or just google and search for the reg. It covers Brandings, Tatoos, scarring, piercings, and any other form of Bodily beautifications.
