I'm shipping to Parris Island on July 12 2004 hoorrahhh. I love the Marine Corps which is why im going active but my education is very important to me too. I would like to know if attending college while in active duty is anything difficult?? I'm aware of programs that assist you in earning a degree. But I would like to know from someone who has experienced it. Please let me know whats the best option of attaining a degree while in the Corps.

I got my degrees while on active duty. Let me provide this advice.
1. You should wait until you are settled in at your first duty station
2. When you check in at your duty station find the base education office.
3. Get a course catalogue from schools offering classes on base.
4. Start out as a "general studies" student.
5. take one class per semester for first two semesters to get adjusted to being a full-time Marine and part-time student.
6. You may want to stick with a broad major, like business. If you transfer to another base/school you won't lose as many credits if the new school offers the same course of study.
Base education will help you register for classes, complete your tuition assistance forms and provide you materials. Remember that tuition assistance only pays for the actual course. Books and other materials or fees are 100% yours to cover.
Best wishes.

P.S. I have a BS in Marketing and an MBA

Do they offer basic math classes etc? I never got past Geometry in high school and I know that you need to have Algebra 3-4 done to attend a 4 year college. Will I still be able to earn college credits?

Seely, you don't need to have Algebra 3 or 4 to go to college. You may need to take remedial classes to take the college level math you will need for your degree, but that is not unusual. And yes, they will offer you all the math classes you could possibly need.

Most colleges will have you take an English placement and Math placement exam. The idea is to determine what level of skills you possess and what courses you may need to take in order to be able to successful take and pass the requirements for your degree. If you require a class to get up to speed, it will be a prep class and may not be worth any credits, these are usually identified by a course catalogue number of 099 or 99. You still have to pay for this class.
